UPDATE ON SHIPMENTS TO THE USA RE TARIFF CHANGES - AS OF OCT 8 2025
TARIFFS: The impact of the new tariff changes on items purchased from us appears to be fairly minimal. Read 'EXEMPTIONS' below. If you attempt an order and there are duties which seem exorbitant, feel free to contact me in case something is amiss on my end. New US Executive Order
Generally speaking there is a new US "executive order" which took effect on Friday August 29th at 12:01 AM which will now apply a tariff on the value of most consumer goods shipped to the USA. Until now, all packages with a declared value of under $800 USD have been exempt from tariffs and customs inspections (called ‘De Minimis’). This exemption has been taken away from American consumers.
*Exemptions*
I have run a number of test orders using a US address. 'Antiques of an Age Over 100 Years' appear to be fully exempt from tariffs. At present, we have updated all our listings to reflect where items were manufactured and when.
My test orders with US made items under 100 years old seem to show about a 5% duty cost and items over 100 years old (the majority of what we sell) show no duty cost. European made items under 100 years old seem to show about a 15% duty cost and items over 100 years old (the majority of what we sell) show no duty cost.
Shipping
Shipping options to the USA are Canada Post (the strike has ended but expect longer processing times in the short term) or DHL (choose the Purolator option at checkout but we will be shipping courier using DHL). UPS, Purolator and Fedex have not created seamless systems for me yet so I cannot use them. I will continue to update here as things change.
For USA only, we will be collecting any potential duties owed at checkout and will send all packages to the USA. You will see a 'Duties' line at checkout which may or may not have a cost factor depending on the item(s) purchased.
I have shipped 100 or so packages to the USA in recent weeks and there do not seem to be any brokerage fees with DHL and Canada Post. I have had NO reports of any fees this far into the new tariff situation. If there is a brokerage fee it will be collected upon delivery to you. It will not show up on your order from Ted Dawson Antique Tools and we are not responsible for any brokerage fees or taxes (government or otherwise) imposed by shipping services. This will be the responsibility of the buyer if there is indeed such a cost from the particular carrier on your parcel.
Shipping Internationally and Within Canada
There is no change here. The USA situation will not change any parameters regarding shipping within Canada or international destinations. Potential duties and taxes (if any) that are in place by governments in other countries on items shipped from Canada remain unchanged at this time as far as we know. Read our general payment and shipping policy here.
