UPDATE ON SHIPMENTS TO THE US RE TARIFF CHANGES - AS OF SEPT 14 2025
WE HAVE RESUMED SHIPPING. The impact of the new tariff changes on items purchased from us appears to be fairly minimal. Read 'EXEMPTIONS' below. If you attempt an order and there are duties which seem exorbitant, feel free to contact me in case something is amiss on my end. New US Executive Order
Generally speaking there is a new US "executive order" which took effect on Friday August 29th at 12:01 AM which will now apply a tariff on the value of most consumer goods shipped to the USA. Until now, all packages with a declared value of under $800 USD have been exempt from tariffs and customs inspections (called ‘De Minimis’). This exemption has been taken away from American consumers.
***Exemptions to These Tariffs***
I have run a number of test orders using a US address. 'Antiques of an Age Over 100 Years' appear to be fully exempt from tariffs. At present, we have updated all our listings to reflect where items were manufactured and when.
My test orders with North American made items under 100 years old seem to show about a 5% duty cost and items over 100 years old (the majority of what we sell) show no duty cost. European made items under 100 years old seem to show about a 15% duty cost and items over 100 years old (the majority of what we sell) show no duty cost.
Shipping
At present we are shipping orders to the USA only with postal services. Two plus weeks into the new tariff reality, shipments with Canada Post/USPS seem to be moving very smoothly noting that postal shipments definitely take longer than couriers so expect about a two week time frame for delivery with the new customs protocols.
We will be collecting any potential duties owed at checkout and will send all packages may or may not have a cost factor depending on the item(s) purchased.
You will see a 'Duties' line at checkout whichFurther, there is the possibility of an added brokerage fee (from the carriers) on shipments. It remains unclear if there will be such fees or what this fee may entail. If there is a brokerage fee it will be collected upon delivery to you. It will not show up on your order from us and Ted Dawson Antique Tools is not responsible for any brokerage fees or taxes (government or otherwise) imposed by shipping services. This will be the responsibility of the buyer if there is indeed such a cost from the particular carrier on your parcel.
There is significant confusion internationally regarding how these tariffs will be collected and processed. Some major postal and courier services worldwide (but not in Canada) are suspending services to the US temporarily until there is more clarity on how to process shipments and collect tariffs.
We are doing our best to navigate the situation and will keep you posted through email and banners on the website if anything changes.
Shipping Internationally and Within Canada
There is no change here. The USA situation will not change any parameters regarding shipping within Canada or international destinations. Potential duties and taxes (if any) that are in place by governments in other countries on items shipped from Canada remain unchanged at this time as far as we know. Read our general payment and shipping policy here.
