Plane body measures about 10 1/2" in length and 2 5/8" wide. Absolutely stunning and in remarkable condition for its age. The rosewood infill, lever cap, plane body and iron are all superb. It has a Ward snecked iron. Dovetailed construction. Very tight. All the pins through the sides are crisp. As good as an example as there is. Blade is very finely hollow ground noting a 1/16" bevel (or chip ?) on each corner. Stamped in numerous places ' H. LAMB' and 'R. S. BALFOUR'.
This is a No. 5 Improved Pattern Miter Plane and features the squared off front extension of Spiers' earlier box miter planes. In researching this, I did not find another example with the square front on this body type which always had a round form extension. Hard pressed to find a better example of a Spiers miter plane let alone a rare variant.
