Excellent overall condition noting some oxidization and pitting on the sole. At least 95% shiny original japanning and nickel on the caps. Some 'scars' on the knurling on the side cutter adjustment wheel. First true type 1 I have owned.
These were only manufactured between 1877 to 1878 and are most identifiable by the unusual dovetailed keyway that sticks outside the main body with one of them notched as seen in photos. After this period, the subsequent versions of this plane had the dovetail keyway flush and within the footprint of the sole.
Very appreciative of Jeff W. Warner who wrote a revised type study on this particular plane with approval from Roger K. Smith himself and my lovely assistant Ashley who gifted me a copy of it. **All edge tools may need to be sharpened and/or honed before use**
