RARE AND EXCELLENT 1868 PATENT STAR TOOL CO MORTISE GAUGE

Very early and rare marking gauge patented April 21 1868 by a W. Brodhead. The unique feature of these gauges was that the head twists on the eccentric shaft of the gauge in order to tighten - a brilliant and effective design. Uncleaned as found with the usual toolbox wear. I believe it is rosewood but may be mahogany. Will glow with a cleaning.
